At 2228 hours the New Castle County Communications center alerted Station 13, Engine and Ladder 11, Engine 25, Rescue 20 for the RIT, and ALS and BLS for a report of an explosion at the Sunoco Oil Plant. Simultaneously the Delaware County Communications also alerted units for the same incident. The Sunoco Oil Plant sits on the Delaware and Pennsylvania borders. Units arrived to find a large amount of fire in the Ethylene plant located on the Delaware side of the plant. Chief Mark Harris from Claymont along with the Chief from Marcus Hook Fire Company, and the Chief from Sunoco Fire Brigade set up unified command within the plant and responding units staged at Ridge Rd. and Blue Ball Ave. Rescue 20 was utilized as the RIT Company and responded into the scene to stage with command. Rescue 20 cleared the scene at 0341 hours and remaining units stayed on scene late into the next day. The cause of this incident is being investigated by the Delaware State Fire Marshalls Office and Sunoco representatives. No one was injured in this incident.
