AFA turns Structure Fire - Collins Park Shopping Center
Sunday, March 22, 2009
At 2335 hours the Communications Center alerted Station 20 for an Automatic Fire Alarm at the Collins Park Liquors store on New Castle Ave. Just as the Communications Center had received additional information from a passer by reporting smoke from a building in the shopping center Chief Maxwell (20-8) went arrival at 2338 hours with heavy smoke showing. The Communications Center immediately re-dispatched Station 20 and adding Engine 22, Engine and Ladder 28/32, Rescue 18, Rescue 13 for the RIT assignment, Ambulance 23, Medic 1, and the State Fire Marshalls office. Chief Maxwell assumed Collins Park Command and advised 20-5 to take the C side of the structure with heavy fire from the rear. Crews deployed an initial hand line to the rear of the structure with a quick knock down of the bulk of the fire. Additional units arrived and deployed a secondary hand line through the front of the building due to the layout of the backend of the store and commenced with the search and ventilation of the fire building as well as checking for extension to the adjacent exposures. There were no injuries to any civilians however one firefighter was evaluated and transported for asthma related emergency and one firefighter was later transported to the hospital for an ankle injury. Both firefighters are doing well and we wish them all the best in a speedy recovery.
The store sustained substantial damage and the cause of the fire is under investigation with the Delaware State Fire Marshalls office. The adjoining stores had received minor damage.
The scene was placed under control at 0039 hours and all units had cleared the scene at 0226 hours.
