LODD Station 39 - Lower Chichester, Delaware County, PA
Wednesday, March 5, 2008
Lieutenant Nick Picozzi Jr. of the Lower Chichester Fire Company, Station 39, was killed today while battling a fire in the basement of a house on the 100 block of Moser Street.
When fire crews arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke showing from a two story single family dwelling with fire reported to be in the basement. When the first three firefighters went in with a hose line to extinguish the fire they encountered heavy smoke conditions that hampered their efforts to locate the seat of the fire. At some point the three firefighters became trapped in the basement. The incident commander requested the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to be activated and assist in the rescue of the three firefighters. Two of the three firefighter were able to get out of the basement, but Lt. Picozzi not able to get out.
Command requested all available firefighter to assist in the search and rescue of their trapped brother. The second alarm and third alarm was requested to assist in the extinguishment of the fire, while firefighters did everything they could to rescue Picozzi. About 30 minutes after the firefighters first became trapped, Picozzi was located and handed off to waiting Paramedics. EMS crews performed CPR all the way to the local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Three other firefighters were transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation and burns. All injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Lt. Picozzi was married with two children. He was a member of the lower Chichester Fire Company for seven years.
On behalf of the Officers and Members of the Holloway Terrace Fire Company we offer our condolences to the Lower Chichester Fire Company and the Picozzi family.
